This was so beautifully written! I also love frequenting from coffee shops. I haven't done it as much as I would like lately, so this post was perfectly nostalgic. Fun fact (no one asked for lol): after completing my PhD I was so burnt out and looking for a career change so I worked at a coffee shop as a barista while I job searched. Honestly, I loved it and miss it so much! Thanks again for writing this beautiful piece :)
I so relate! There's nothing that beats a coffee shop for me when it comes to finding my happy place to hide out and write. The background noise is just right, the sweet treats...sweet, and the people watching is always gold. I wouldn't have been able to resist that cupcake either btw!!! Loved reading this.
It's truly such a good balance. "Hide out" is such an apt way of putting it. I'm existing in public, but am also kind of hiding out on my own...this quiet anonymity while still being ever-so-slightly social.
And I should've known—as soon as I brought that cupcake back to my table, it wasn't going to last more than 10 minutes (in my head I said "I'll dig in at 10am")
Yes! Whenever I have moved to a new neighborhood, finding the different coffee shops and testing them all out was paramount! I didn’t feel like I could claim to live there without having been to them all.
Also for one wild year of my life I lived in the West Village right by that Joes Coffee!
I love this article so much. I remember attempting to put parental controls on your coffee consumption 😂. Didn’t work!
I identify with so many of these sweet details, the banter, the connection with others over the freakin’ door! Ha. Had me laughing out loud (at a barber shop while my Valentine got a haircut, not at a coffee shop)!
It was really interesting reading about third places and the ways we humans connect and break the isolation that creeps up at times.
Lastly - I made it through college algebra (a.k.a. stopped procrastinating and did my homework) at that same Art of Joe Coffee on Waverly Place. What is it about coffee shops that break procrastination?

Also, I always want the fun facts! My husband is also ex-coffee and it truly seems like a delightful little world 😊
